Although many players greeted them with a dose of disappointment, the ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II have already become some of the best-selling titles on the PlayStation Store.
According to current sales charts, both games have reached the top in several major PlayStation markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Notably, Black Ops II is currently selling slightly better than the first part, but both titles are achieving very strong results. They have outperformed a number of major new releases, including Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, EA Sports College Football 27, and even pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI.

This kind of success is particularly interesting because both ports faced numerous criticisms right after their announcement. Players criticized the fact that these are almost unchanged versions of the original PS3 games, with no significant graphical or technical improvements, while the base price is set at $39.99, with DLC content not included in the package.
Subscribers to PlayStation Plus can currently receive a 50 percent discount, but many still believe that such a price should represent the standard value for this kind of release.
Despite the criticism, it seems that Activision hit the target. The power of nostalgia and the status that both Black Ops titles hold among fans of the series were evidently enough for players to reach for their wallets again. It remains to be seen whether such sales results will further encourage Activision to continue bringing older Call of Duty titles to modern platforms. Judging by the first days of sales, the market for such re-releases still very much exists, even when they offer only minimal improvements over the originals.
