Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a game that clearly knows its audience. This is not a remake that tries to turn old JRPG foundations into something modern at all costs, but rather a package that respectfully brings two very important titles back to life. After Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Square Enix here closes the Erdrick trilogy and offers players the chance to experience the first two adventures in a much more beautiful, clearer, and accessible form.

The biggest change is, as expected, the presentation. The HD-2D style does an excellent job again: the world looks warm, fairy-tale-like, and nostalgic, but modern enough not to feel like a mere restoration. The sprites, environments, and battles have that recognizable charm that has allowed Dragon Quest to endure for so long. The music is also one of the stronger elements, and the addition of voice acting in English and Japanese gives the game a bit more life than the originals ever could.

However, these are still old games at heart. Dragon Quest I is shorter and simpler, with one hero and a very classic structure, while Dragon Quest II is larger, more content-rich, and closer to what we expect from a traditional JRPG today. Added content, more difficulty options, and modern solutions help, but do not completely erase the old-fashioned rhythm. Battles can be frequent, grinding is still present, and the design of some dungeons shows its age.

But therein lies part of the charm. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is not a game that will turn everyone into a genre lover, but for those who enjoy classic JRPG adventures, this is a nicely packaged, pleasant, and content-rich return to the roots.
