When discussing the history of the fighting genre, most attention almost always goes to Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. However, without SNK's Fatal Fury, or Garou Densetsu as the series is known in Japan, the development of modern fighting games would look completely different. That is why the book Fatal Fury / Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History represents much more than just an ordinary retrospective. It is a detailed documentation of one of the most influential franchises in the history of video games.

Bitmap Books has been building a reputation as a publisher of top-notch books dedicated to gaming history for years, and this edition continues that trend. Although I had the opportunity to review the PDF version of the book, it is worth noting that the physical edition comes in a luxurious hardcover, with quality paper and premium printing, which further emphasizes the collectible value of the edition. Even from the digital version, it is clear how much attention has been paid to the design, content layout, and presentation of the rich archival material.

Spanning over 460 pages, the book chronologically follows the entire development of the series, from the original Fatal Fury from 1991 to the latest installments like City of the Wolves. What sets this book apart from many other gaming monographs is not just the amount of content, but the way it is presented. Each game receives enough space to explain its origins, developmental challenges, new mechanics, and the impact it has left on the industry.

Of particular value are the interviews with people who were directly involved in the development of the games. Instead of a classic listing of facts, the reader gains insight into the thoughts of designers, artists, and producers who explain why certain decisions were made, how legendary characters were created, and how much experimentation was needed for Fatal Fury to find its own identity. The sections discussing the development of animations, the work of pixel artists, and the creation of SNK's recognizable visual identity are especially interesting.

The visual part of the book is equally impressive. Concept art, promotional illustrations, sprites, screenshots, and rare materials from SNK's archive turn each page into a small exhibition of gaming history. The book is not made just to be read once and returned to the shelf. This is an edition you will often revisit, whether to look at the illustrations again, compare character development, or simply enjoy the artistic work that marked an era of arcade games.

Of course, not everything is perfect. Occasionally, it feels like the authors want to give equal attention to every installment, so some chapters may seem a bit slower or contain information that will interest only the biggest fans of the series. Additionally, some readers may wish for even more space dedicated to certain illustrators and artists whose work marked SNK during the 1990s. However, these are minor complaints that do not diminish the overall quality of the book.

What is particularly pleasing is the fact that the book does not romanticize the history of the series, but openly discusses periods when Fatal Fury was not in the spotlight, as well as the challenges SNK faced over the years. This makes the entire story feel sincere and provides a much better insight into the development of a franchise than a simple chronology of releases could offer.

Fatal Fury / Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History is not a book you will buy just because you love Terry Bogard or grew up with Neo Geo. This is a book for anyone who wants to understand how fighting games as we know them today came to be. It successfully combines a historical overview, the development of video games, art, and interviews with people who were part of that process, thus becoming one of the most comprehensive editions dedicated to a fighting series.

For fans of Fatal Fury, this is very easy to recommend, and we believe it will also appeal to anyone interested in the history of video games and the development of the fighting genre. Bitmap Books has once again shown how to create a gaming monograph that simultaneously informs, educates, and reminds us why some games have left an indelible mark on the industry, and if you would like to have it in your collection, take a look at the official Bitmap Books website, where you can find this as well as many other excellent gaming publications: https://www.bitmapbooks.com.
