"It makes no sense": Former PlayStation chief criticizes Sony's new PC strategy

PlayStation is skipping Gamescom again

Sony continues its policy of absence from the largest European gaming fair.

Sony Interactive will not have its own PlayStation booth at Gamescom 2026 this year either, which takes place from August 26 to 30, 2026, in Cologne. As reported by GamesWirtschaft, PlayStation will skip its seventh Gamescom in a row in the traditional fair format, at least when it comes to its own space in the visitor area. The last major PlayStation appearance in Cologne took place back in 2019, during the era of PlayStation 4, when the main games included Death Stranding, Marvel’s Iron Man VR, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The decision is interesting because PlayStation would not lack themes this year. Marvel’s Wolverine is set to release on September 15, 2026, just two weeks after the fair, while Grand Theft Auto VI arrives in November, around which Sony already has a strong marketing collaboration with Rockstar Games. Sony is not the only major publisher that will not have a traditional presence at the fair this year, but the absence of PlayStation still carries symbolic weight.

On the other hand, Nintendo and Microsoft Xbox have already announced their attendance at Gamescom 2026, while confirmed exhibitors include Ubisoft, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Pearl Abyss, Krafton, Astragon, and Capcom. Gamescom thus remains a huge event, but Sony's decision once again shows how much major publishers have distanced themselves from the mandatory fair model and how much they prefer to choose their own pace for announcements today.
