In this review of missed news, we bring you some interesting tidbits from last week, from the issues of modern graphics in stealth games to the new studio of the former director of Returnal.

Last week brought several interesting news items that we didn't have time to cover separately, so we present them in a brief overview. Some are just rumors and trademark filings, some are comments from veteran developers, and some could have a more concrete impact on the PlayStation scene in the coming months.

One of the more interesting topics concerns stealth games and modern graphics. Clint Hocking, the director of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, believes that advanced lighting, ray tracing, and more realistic shadows can make it harder for players to read the space. In older stealth games, dark and lit areas were often clearly separated, while today's more realistic depiction of light can make it unclear where the player is actually hidden and where they are not. In other words, graphical realism does not always mean better gameplay design.

Meanwhile, Sony has trademarked the name Break In, which immediately sparked speculation that it could be a new name for Fairgame$, a cooperative heist game being developed by Haven Studios. For now, there is no official confirmation that this is indeed the game in question, but the name fits very well with the concept of break-ins, heists, and escaping with loot. The filing came ahead of the new State of Play, so it wouldn't be a surprise if Sony reveals more details soon.

Interesting news also came from Finland. Harry Krueger, the director of Returnal, has founded a new studio called Cosmic Division after leaving Housemarque in 2023. The studio is working on a new single-player IP, promising a gameplay-focused experience, a strong authorial identity, and an emotionally expressive story. Krueger has Returnal, Nex Machina, Resogun, and Outland behind him, so his new project will certainly be under the spotlight of action game enthusiasts.
