Konami has finally revealed the release date of the HD editions of the original two games from the legendary Suikoden JRPG series. Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC will be released on March 6, 2025.

For those who don't know, Suikoden is a Japanese RPG series that has achieved relatively solid success through five main sequels and several spin-offs. The first part was released in 1995 for the PlayStation, and the last part, Suikoden V, in 2006 for the PlayStation 2. The main creator of the original and the two sequels after that is Yoshitaka Murayama. When Murayama came to Konami in the early nineties, he was tasked with making an RPG series for the console that Konami was working on with his colleagues.

That RPG was supposed to be Konami's answer to the very popular RPG titles from Enix (Dragon Quest) and Square (Final Fantasy). Junko Kawano (designer of Suikoden V and Tactis) has been working on the series since the very beginning. Konami abandons the console, and Suikoden moves to the PlayStation. A brief history of the series is available here.

The remaster brings graphical improvements, new character designs, improved sound effects and some small improvements (for example speeding up the battles) that will make it easier to play for a new generation of players who are not used to JRPG mechanics from the mid-1990s. In case of good sales results, it is possible to release HD versions of the remaining sequels.
