The Shore: Enhanced Edition

If you've ever planned a weekend by the sea, only to have your plans ruined by fog, a heap of black sand, and ancient deities looking at you like a snack, you've probably found yourself in the video game The Shore. This game is proof that family trips in the Lovecraft universe never end happily, but they do leave a pile of trauma and breathtaking visual effects.

The Shore: Enhanced Edition is a first-person adventure horror game deeply inspired by the cosmic horror of H. P. Lovecraft. After the original version was released for PC back in 2021, console players welcomed its refreshed edition. The PlayStation 5 version was officially launched on April 30, 2026, and is immediately available on the PlayStation Store for 19.99 euros. We played the PlayStation version.

The original version of the game was developed by independent developers Dragonis Games, led by creator Ares Dragonis. The enhanced edition for consoles is primarily credited to the publishers Iphigames. The development of this video game began as a passionate indie project by a small team. Their goal was to skillfully evoke an atmosphere of despair, agony, and human helplessness in the face of ancient gods. The development process for the PS5 version took several years, and the aim of the "Enhanced" edition was to leverage the power of the new generation of consoles to achieve deeper immersion.

Although there is currently only a digital edition, a physical edition has been announced for the end of May. Interestingly, it comes bundled with another game from the same studio – Necrophosis: Full Consciousness (which we will also review soon!). The digital edition has been available since April on the PlayStation Store.

The graphics and visual style are the biggest strengths of this video game. The Shore presents a dark, melancholic, and surreal style. The PlayStation version is superior to the PC version from 2021 – it features significantly improved lighting, sharper textures, and a more detailed environment. In the game, we are placed on a mysterious, abandoned island with black sand, foggy beaches, and geometrical structures unseen in real life. The design of the monsters and ancient gods (like Cthulhu) is executed spectacularly and terrifyingly, successfully conveying cosmic horror, where we as human characters are small and insignificant.

Gameplay in the first half of the game relies on the 'walking simulator' genre, with an emphasis on exploration and puzzle-solving. We play as Andrew, a father desperately searching for his daughter. As the story progresses, the gameplay shifts to survival horror – Andrew finds ancient artifacts that bring survival and combat with monsters through the narrative.

The game does not have multiplayer. The Shore: Enhanced Edition is strictly a single-player experience. The developers' decision to exclude any form of online play is justified by the very design of the game. The essence of Lovecraftian horror lies in complete isolation, the feeling of loneliness, and the mental decay of the individual.

Although this is an imperfect video game, The Shore: Enhanced Edition is a fascinating indie horror. If you're willing to overlook some bugs and sluggish combat, this game is worth your time. For the price of 19.99 euros, you get top-notch Lovecraftian atmosphere and chills for one evening.
