Home / Previews / PlayStation and Bungie are reportedly working on a remake of Borderlands, but with a major twist.

Unofficial information claims that the cult looter-shooter could become a PlayStation exclusive with live-service elements inspired by Destiny.

A new rumor is circulating on the internet that, if proven true, could represent one of the biggest changes in the history of Borderlands.

According to content creator Trancea, PlayStation Studios is reportedly in early talks with Gearbox Software about developing a remake of the first Borderlands. However, instead of Gearbox, the project is said to have been taken over by Bungie, the studio known for the Halo and Destiny series.

If the information is accurate, it would not be a classic remake that faithfully follows the original. Instead, Bungie is reportedly planning to completely overhaul the game into a title with pronounced live-service elements, inspired by its own experience with the Destiny series. According to rumors, the remake would utilize an open world similar to that of Borderlands 4, with seasonal content that would be charged additionally and semi-customizable characters instead of predefined Vault Hunters. A similar treatment for Borderlands 2 is also reportedly being considered, which could also become a PlayStation exclusive.

However, all of the above should be taken with a large grain of caution for now. The source of this information does not have a proven history of reliable leaks, and the report itself states that these are just early discussions between the parties involved. Additionally, the owner of the Borderlands franchise is Take-Two Interactive, so any decision about the future of the series would also have to involve the publisher.

If the rumors turn out to be true, this is a project that could divide fans. On one hand, Bungie is a studio with extensive experience in developing top-tier FPS mechanics and online content. On the other hand, turning Borderlands into a live-service title would represent a significant departure from the formula that has made the series one of the most popular looter-shooters on the market.

For now, however, everything remains in the realm of speculation. Without official confirmation from the involved companies, this information should be viewed solely as rumors, not as a confirmed plan for the future of the Borderlands franchise.
