The action-adventure Ayelet Studio has received its first gameplay trailer, showcasing the Chola Empire, combat inspired by ancient martial arts, and the exploration of Thanjavur.

Ayelet Studio has released the first gameplay trailer for Son of Thanjai, a cinematic action-adventure set in 11th century South India. The game follows a Chola king burdened by the legacy of his father as he returns to Thanjavur and discovers that the empire is no longer what he left it. Unrest spreads through the city, allies act uncertainly, enemies hide within their own ranks, and foreign saboteurs approach the throne.

The gameplay trailer emphasizes combat, stealth, and a more open approach to missions. Players will be able to ride horses, elephants, and bulls, blend in with crowds, and hunt targets throughout the city of Thanjai and its surroundings. The combat system includes Surulvaal, a deadly whip-sword, while close combat is inspired by Kalarippayattu, an ancient martial art. Finishing moves, disarming opponents, infiltrating enemy camps, and interrogating key targets for important information have also been announced.

Son of Thanjai aims to stand out by showcasing the culture of the Chola Empire. Ayelet Studio states that the game world has been carefully researched and shaped as a vivid recreation of 11th century South India, featuring temples, the streets of Thanjavur, folk performances, classical dances, and customs inspired by Tamil tradition. Players will encounter priests, farmers, merchants, and fishermen, and their relationship with the main character will depend on how the king presents himself.

Son of Thanjai is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. The release date has not yet been announced.
