Arion Kurtaj, the hacker behind one of the largest data leaks in video game history, will appear in court again after being released from custody in a hospital.
Kurtaj, a member of the hacking group Lapsus$, was declared unfit for trial at the end of 2023 due to a medical diagnosis of "acute autism," and was placed in a high-security psychiatric facility. As reported by BBC journalist Joe Tidy, he has now been moved to a regular prison, and a new trial is scheduled for November 2026, the same month that Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be released.
Kurtaj drew significant attention in 2022 after posting as many as 90 development clips of GTA VI on an online forum, as well as part of the game's source code. He carried out the attack while under police supervision in a hotel, using only an Amazon Fire Stick, the hotel television, and a mobile phone.
According to earlier reports from BBC, he exhibited violent behavior during custody and expressed a desire to engage in cybercrime again as soon as the opportunity arises.
It is currently unknown why he has been declared fit for trial again, and British authorities have not yet disclosed additional information about the case.
