Kernelbay is a cozy idle fishing simulator indie game that provides a very relaxing way of automatic fishing. Since it is an idle game, I didn't expect much complexity, but I thought I would still have a bit more need for additional clicking, at least at the beginning. On the other hand, the atmosphere the game provides is fantastic, along with an excellent selection of music.
As it is an idle title, there isn't much concrete to say about the gameplay. It involves standard "economic" development where with each upgrade we earn more to progress further.
The game offers six different locations, each with a unique atmosphere, which I believe is one of the most important aspects of such games. Additionally, each location brings twelve new licenses, or twelve new fish or creatures that we can unlock to increase our earnings.
Besides licenses, there is also various equipment we can possess in the game. At the beginning, we start with a regular rod, a boat, and one drone, while later we unlock significantly better equipment. Interestingly, the equipment cannot be purchased; it is unlocked through progress in the game.
Progress works in such a way that we need to buy a certain form of additional currency, and after we collect two units of that currency, we can spend them to continue to the next location. In addition, we receive two new pieces of equipment.
What I would particularly highlight about this idle title is definitely the relaxing music it provides. Each of the six locations has completely different music and additional sounds that greatly contribute to relaxation, and they are also excellent for creating a working atmosphere. Since the game is designed to be running in the background while you do something else, I think they executed that part excellently.
Even after I finished the game, I still love to turn it on just for the music. It suits me perfectly while I work because it helps calm my thoughts. Additionally, the game provides its own wallpapers that change as time passes in the game. The wallpapers are tailored to the atmosphere and location you are currently in, and considering that it is still in beta, I believe that aspect will only get better over time.
In conclusion, it is an idle title where you never expect too much, so it is especially nice when it surprises you with anything. This game manages to do that through its relaxing atmosphere and simple approach, without too many demanding mechanics. Because of this, it can easily be left running in the background while you do something else, without interrupting your work with its demands, while simultaneously providing a pleasant and calming atmosphere.
