Bungie is currently not working on Destiny 3, and the studio is preparing for new significant layoffs after the active development of Destiny 2 concludes. According to Bloomberg's report, Destiny 3 is not in active production, nor is it currently approved as the next major project of the studio.
This information comes after the confirmation that Destiny 2 is ending its long-running live service phase. The last major update for the game is arriving on June 9, 2026, marking the closure of one of the longest chapters in the modern history of online gaming. Destiny 2 has been one of the key live service titles for nearly nine years, and Bungie has maintained a large community of players through it, with numerous expansions, seasons, and events.
Instead of working on Destiny 3, Bungie is now turning to Marathon, a new extraction shooter that has become the studio's central project. Some employees who worked on Destiny 2 have already been transferred to Marathon, while additional team members are expected to join the development of that game after the last Destiny 2 update concludes.
Within Bungie, there are teams that represent and test new ideas, including projects related to the Destiny franchise, but none of them have been officially approved for full production yet. This means that the Destiny series is not necessarily finished forever, but Destiny 3 is not a project the studio is actively working on at this time.
Particularly concerning is the part of the report that speaks about a new wave of layoffs. Bungie has already gone through significant job cuts before, and this new round of layoffs further confirms how much the studio has changed since Sony's acquisition. Sony purchased Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 billion, primarily due to the studio's experience in live service games, but in recent years, this segment has proven to be significantly more challenging and risky than expected.
For Destiny players, this is a tough moment. Destiny 2 is nearing the end of active support, Destiny 3 is not in development, and Bungie's future now largely depends on Marathon and new projects that still need to fight for the green light!
