Ubisoft has announced that it will shut down its free-to-play first-person shooter, XDefiant, in 2025. Although the game had a promising start and attracted millions of players, Ubisoft failed to retain enough players to make the game sustainable on a long-term level. As a result, Ubisoft decided to stop further investment in the game.

As of December 3, 2024, new downloads and player registrations are no longer available. The game will remain active until June 3, 2025, and the third season of content will be released as planned. Unfortunately, the shutdown of XDefiant led to the closure of Ubisoft's production studios in San Francisco and Osaka, resulting in the layoff of 277 employees.

Despite these challenges, Ubisoft remains committed to games-as-a-service development and plans to apply the lessons learned from XDefiant to future projects-
