FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a complete remake of the second installment in the FATAL FRAME (also known as PROJECT ZERO) series, which was originally released in 2003. The title has been completely revamped to offer an even more spooky experience, with significantly improved graphics, sound and controls.
Improvements in graphics bring a higher level of detail with refined textures, impressive contrast of light and shadow, creating a more spooky and realistic atmosphere than ever before. Sound has also been completely reworked to offer surround audio that immerses players deep into the action, allowing for a more authentic experience. Players will not only hear, but also feel the presence of ghosts – they can now appear when you least expect them, such as trying to grab the protagonist's hands as she reaches for an item or waiting in the dark. Quick reaction will be key to escaping these attacks, as failure means a loss of “Willpower” energy and directly leads to an intense fight.
The Camera Obscure mechanics – a signature feature of the FATAL FRAME series – have also been reworked to provide a richer and more tense experience during exploration and combat. Players will still be able to attack ghosts by shooting, but accurately aligning focus with a target will now deal more damage. If the damage exceeds a certain threshold, the "Shutter Chance" state is activated, in which it is possible to inflict great damage with one perfectly timed shot.
Fatal Frame can be triggered by shooting at the perfect moment, interrupting and stunning the opponent. If the player manages to perform a Fatal Frame during the “Shutter Chance” state, “Fatal Time” is activated – a short window of time that allows for a series of rapid shots for maximum damage.
To face the ghosts lurking in the shadows of Minakami Village, players will be able to use new Camera Obscura features like focus, zoom and filters. Focusing points of light on the screen increases damage if multiple points are hit, while zoom allows you to attack from a distance or engage multiple targets at once. The camera will also help during exploration, as certain objects in the environment can be photographed.
Filters will help in uncovering mysteries - for example, the "Paraceptual Filter" increases the shooting distance in battle, and during research it allows the display of past events through "residual memories".
In addition, the remake also introduces new mechanics, such as holding Maya's hand, which restores the player's health and spiritual energy. But if Mayu trips or falls, Mio will have to help her up. Players will be able to collect "Charms" (pendants) that bring various bonuses, and increasing the bag with charms increases the number of those that can be equipped at the same time.
The Digital Deluxe Edition is now available for pre-order and includes the base game, a digital soundtrack, a digital art book, and a Deluxe bonus pack with a special Charm and costumes for Mio and Maya. The Digital Deluxe upgrade will also be available separately. Players who purchase the physical or digital version of the game before March 25, 2026 will receive early bonuses: Wraith Charm, Peony Hair Ornament (red/blue) and Kimono (red/black).
Those who make a digital pre-order before March 12, 2026 will receive additional bonuses: Spirit Charm, cat ears (white/black), and Crimson Butterfly – Mio (Original) and Crimson Butterfly – Mayu (Original) costumes, inspired by the original release of the game.
