SEGA and RGG Studio have officially announced Virtua Fighter Crossroads, the new installment of the long-running fighting series previously known as Virtua Fighter New Project. The game was presented during the Summer Game Fest 2026, with a release planned for 2027.
Unlike the classic installments of the series, Virtua Fighter Crossroads will not be just a traditional competitive fighting game. SEGA describes it as a narrative-driven action adventure where story and combat intertwine through the fates of four protagonists. The story takes place in the city of Vilasapara, known as the "City of Martial Arts," where an underground fighting tournament is attempting to become a national sports spectacle.
The trailer introduced a new fighter, Ciel, as well as a different direction for the series. The game will feature city exploration, side stories, encounters with various characters, and decisions that can affect alliances and consequences in the story. In addition to the main narrative mode, a Versus mode with local and online options has also been confirmed.
The combat will still retain the recognizable philosophy of the series, with simpler controls, a more realistic approach, and an emphasis on tactical outsmarting. The story is expected to include fights against multiple opponents and boss encounters, further demonstrating how Crossroads is moving away from the strictly arcade format.
The script is being worked on by well-known names from the industry and broader entertainment production. Among them are David Hayter as the world-building supervisor, Brad Kane as the lead writer, Tsuyoshi Furuta from the Like a Dragon and Judgment series, and Shinji Yamamoto, known for his work on games from the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads currently has no confirmed platform or precise release date, but it has been confirmed to arrive during 2027.
