In a new technological achievement, surgeons from Switzerland have successfully performed remote endoscopic surgery using the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. This incredible operation was performed on a pig in Hong Kong, almost 9,300 kilometers away from the surgeon in Zurich. Thanks to the precision of the DualSense controller, which was originally developed for playing video games, surgeons were able to precisely navigate through demanding surgical movements.
A surgical team from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong has shown how technology beyond the medical framework can advance telemedicine and enable the provision of emergency medical care in remote areas. The experiment involves the use of a robotic system and a magnetic endoscope, which was controlled via a DualSense controller connected to the system via the Internet, with a minimum delay of less than 300 milliseconds, which is the key to the success of this type of surgery.
This achievement opens the door to the possibility of providing quality surgical care in areas with limited medical resources, and some experts suggest that this technology could even be used in space, where surgeons from Earth could perform operations on astronauts in space.
This pioneering approach shows how technology from the world of video games can have a huge impact beyond the entertainment industry, contributing to the development of innovation in medicine and improving the quality of healthcare on a global scale.
