Sony patented a PlayStation controller with buttons that change their feel.

Home / Tech / Sony patented a PlayStation controller with buttons that change their feel.

Sony has filed a new patent that describes a completely different concept for the PlayStation controller: buttons that can change weight and resistance in real-time, depending on what is happening in the game.

Controller that adapts to the game

According to the patent description, Sony Interactive Entertainment is developing a type of controller whose buttons can change their feel during use. Some presses would be harder, while others would be softer, all tailored to the visual content on the screen. The patent explains that the controller would adapt according to the situation in the game or to the personal preferences of the player.

Magneto-highly elastic material

The document mentions a specific material: magneto-highly elastic elastomer. Its weight can change under the influence of magnets and magnetic fields, allowing the controller to switch from one weight to another. Sony describes that a player's finger could almost sink into the button, after which the button would re-secure around the finger, creating a new feeling of pressure.

The goal of the patent is to enhance the player's experience in the game through additional tactile sensations. The buttons would not simply be mechanical switches, but dynamic elements that respond to the current situation in the game.

This can be seen as a continuation of Sony's efforts to make the DualSense and other controllers even more tactile and sensory-rich alongside existing features like vibrations and adaptive triggers.

Patent is not a guarantee for a product

Although the patent is publicly available, this does not mean that Sony will necessarily produce such a controller. Documents often describe futuristic concepts that end up as mere ideas, with no intention for actual production.

It is still unknown whether this patent will ever evolve into a real DualSense device, but the concept of buttons that harden and soften during gameplay has already attracted significant attention in gaming media.
