The historical RPG features tactical combat, choices with consequences, eight companions, and cooperative gameplay set in Japan around the year 1600.

Campfire Cabal and THQ Nordic have announced Expeditions: Samurai, a new installment in the historical RPG series that this time takes players to Japan around the year 1600. The game will arrive on PC during the summer of 2026 through Early Access, and it is being developed by a Danish studio founded in 2022, led by veterans who worked on the titles Expeditions: Conquistador, Expeditions: Viking, and Expeditions: Rome.

The story begins with the arrival of the Dutch frigate De Albatros in Japan, but history takes a different path here. William Adams never becomes the first European samurai as that role is taken by the player, as the newly elected leader of a group of privateers caught in the final stages of a brutal civil war. Decisions will affect the crew, relationships with powerful warlords, and the future of the country.

Expeditions: Samurai features a branching story, eight companions with their own quests and motives, the ability to develop friendships, rivalries, and romances, as well as tactical turn-based combat. The combat system combines simultaneous actions, stealth, ambushes, gadgets, and both pirate and Japanese weapons. For the first time in the series, drop-in/drop-out cooperative play will also be available.

The developers plan for the final version to offer approximately 60 hours of gameplay, fully voiced dialogues, a large selection of weapons, skills, and upgrades, as well as the ability to manage your own village after acquiring the title of Hatamoto. That part will not be available immediately at the start of Early Access but will be added during development.
