ATRE: Dominance Wars functions as yet another fantasy RTS where you build an army, capture settlements, and conquer the map. However, after a few matches, it becomes clear that beneath the surface lies a much more complex combination of RTS, 4X strategy, and hero management.
In the game, you lead your own empire through the conquest of new territories, resource management, and the development of avatars that lead your armies. Settlements are not just places for unit production; they form the foundation of the entire economy, while mana drives almost everything from researching new spells to developing infrastructure and using magic in combat.
The magic system is one of the most interesting parts of the game, as it is tied to the economy, empire expansion, and long-term strategy. As you progress, you unlock new combinations and upgrades that open up different playstyles, making each round feel different.
However, ATRE is still an Early Access title, and it shows. The biggest issue at the moment is the very modest tutorial that explains many key mechanics superficially. Systems like avatar development, spell usage, or resource management often leave players to experiment on their own, which can be frustrating during the first few hours of gameplay.
The combat also isn't the strongest aspect of the game so far. It works quite solidly, but after a larger number of battles, it can easily become repetitive. Much more satisfaction comes from planning expansion, developing the economy, and optimizing your own strategy than from the conflicts themselves.
First impressions are generally positive. ATRE already has enough depth to attract fans of games like Northgard or Dune: Spice Wars. It still lacks content, better onboarding, and additional polish, but the potential is certainly visible.
The demo is available on Steam.
