Sony has officially commented for the first time on the situation regarding PlayStation 6 during its latest financial report, confirming that the release date and price of the new console have not yet been decided.
The President and CEO of Sony, Hiroki Totoki, stated during the Q&A portion of the financial report that the company is still analyzing market conditions, particularly the rising prices of memory and production components that could significantly impact future hardware.
Totoki stated:
“We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.”
Sony notes that over the next few years, the prices of RAM and other components are likely to remain very high due to strong global demand related to the AI industry and data centers. For this reason, the company is considering various scenarios for PlayStation 6, including possible changes to the business model and the way the console is sold.
Although Sony has not officially confirmed when PS6 will arrive, several reports in recent months have suggested that the original plan was for a release in 2027. However, some analysts now believe that the console could be delayed until 2028 or even 2029.
At the same time, Sony clearly continues to rely heavily on the PlayStation 5 generation. According to the latest company data, PS5 has sold around 93.7 million units worldwide so far, and the release of Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to further extend the lifecycle of the current console.
All of this suggests that Sony does not want to rush into a new generation of hardware this time, especially at a moment when rising production costs are becoming one of the biggest challenges in the gaming industry.
