Although the release of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for February 12, 2027, Crystal Dynamics continues to publish development diaries revealing to fans how the creation of the new Lara's adventure is progressing.
The latest video is dedicated to the legendary levels set in Peru, specifically the first locations that players will explore at the very beginning of the game. These snowy caves, filled with bats, wolves, and bears, represented many people's first encounter with Lara Croft back in the late nineties.
Level designer Andrzej Kula describes the return to Peru as a "return home" for long-time fans of the series. However, the developers emphasize that Legacy of Atlantis is not a classic remake, but a complete reinterpretation of the original adventure.
Creative director Michal Kuk highlights that the locations will retain their familiar identity, but will simultaneously offer entirely new areas, a different arrangement of the environment, and expanded exploration elements. In other words, the goal is not to faithfully replicate the original Tomb Raider or Tomb Raider: Anniversary, but to reimagine their vision using the possibilities of modern technology.
Despite this, the studio promises that the game will be rich with recognizable details from the first Tomb Raider.
Actress Alix Wil, who embodies Lara Croft, confirmed that the game will contain "lots of classic Lara Croft and Tomb Raider iconography". Although she did not reveal which elements are involved, many fans expect the return of familiar structures, architecture, and iconic scenes that marked the original.
The video also showcases several completely new puzzles, including a large ancient mechanism covered in ice that fits perfectly into the atmosphere of the Peruvian caves. Additionally, Crystal Dynamics aims to further enrich the game world with historical details. They found inspiration in the real conquest of the city of Vilcabamba, so players will encounter traces of past battles, activated traps, and remnants of conflicts between Spanish conquerors and the local population during their exploration.
According to Experience Director Jeff Adamas, the studio's goal is not just to recreate familiar locations, but to rekindle the feeling players had when they first explored them nearly thirty years ago.
As someone who grew up with the original Tomb Raider, this is the most interesting part of everything we've seen so far. If it were just a regular remake, it would probably be difficult to relive the same feeling of discovering the unknown. However, the fact that Crystal Dynamics wants to combine nostalgia with entirely new ideas could be exactly what the series needs. If they succeed in preserving the atmosphere, the feeling of loneliness and exploration that characterized the original, Legacy of Atlantis has the potential to become one of Lara's best adventures yet.
