Discover why this survival game is still popular among players.

Although Green Hell is no longer a fresh name on the scene, this survival adventure from the Amazon jungle continues to show impressive resilience. While many games in this genre quickly burn out after the initial hype, Green Hell has built a stable player base over the years, as confirmed by the impressive number of copies sold, which this month surpassed 12 million! In other words, the jungle is still very much inhabited, only now it is populated by more experienced players.

What keeps this game relevant is not just the numbers, but also the continuous support from the developers. Through numerous free updates, Green Hell has significantly evolved. New content, improvements to the survival system, and additional gameplay modes have expanded an already complex experience. One of the most important additions is definitely the co-op mode, which completely changes the game's dynamics. Surviving in the jungle is no longer a solitary battle against nature and your own sanity; now you can build shelters, hunt, heal each other, and, of course, panic together when something attacks you from the bushes.

In practice, co-op works surprisingly well and gives the game a new dimension. While solo play emphasizes isolation and psychological pressure, playing with others brings a more relaxed yet chaotic tone. There’s nothing like the moment when one player tries to start a fire while another screams because they picked up parasites from the river. It’s these unpredictable moments that make Green Hell particularly fun and playable in the long run.

The game has also received additional narrative content through updates, such as the Spirits of Amazonia story, which further deepens the world and provides more context to the entire adventure. Additionally, the technical performance has been polished over time, although now and then a bug pops up to remind you that this is not a perfect experience.

Gameplay remains one of the most realistic in the survival genre. The systems of nutrition, illness, and mental health are still unforgiving, but that’s exactly why it rewards players who put in the effort to learn its rules. Green Hell does not try to be “easier” than before, and that works in its favor.

Interestingly, the series is taking a step further. The developers have already released the Green Hell VR version, which has made the entire experience even more intense. If the regular version could cause discomfort while you’re removing leeches from a virtual body, know that VR has taken it to a whole new level. You can read more about that version in our separate review.

In conclusion, Green Hell is one of those titles that has only gained value over time. It’s not a new game, but it is still very much relevant. If you skipped it earlier, now might be the right time to step into the jungle. Just don’t expect to be welcomed with open arms.
