After a long wait, everyone's favorite dragon Spyro is back in a completely new adventure. At the Xbox Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond was announced, a new game from the well-known platformer series that is set to be released in 2027. This is the first major new Spyro title in a long time, excluding the Skylanders era. The last classic new game in the series was released back in 2008, so this announcement has understandably garnered a lot of attention among fans of 3D platformers.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is being developed by Toys for Bob, a studio that knows the series well as they previously worked on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy collection. The new game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and a precise release date has not yet been confirmed. This will give the series a true quality fourth game. Additional information will be revealed later.
Compared to its predecessors, the biggest novelty in gameplay will be more free flying. Spyro could fly before, but this ability was mostly tied to specific levels or special parts of the game. In A Realm Beyond, flying will be a significantly more important part of exploration, as Spyro will be able to take off from any point on the map. Although it will visually have a somewhat different look, Spyro will sound familiar. His voice is once again provided by Tom Kenny, the long-time voice actor who has already defined the character of the purple dragon.
