When I first installed and launched Swords & Souls Legacy Collection, I realized I was going back in time and nostalgia hit me. I'm playing a collection of 5 flash games that I once played in the browser. Flash games were the beginning, they laid the foundation for some of today's developers, and thanks to SoulGame Studios and Armor Games, these games are not forgotten. The old games have received a new look on the computer and are combined in Swords &
Souls Legacy Collection.
What is Swords & Souls Legacy Collection?
This game is actually a collection of 5 old flash games from SoulGame Studios that have now been ported to Steam without the need for flash. All games are optimized for 16:9 screens, Steam achievements have been added, and some old issues have been fixed.
The collection includes the following games:
- Swords & Souls
- Rogue Soul
- Rogue Soul 2
- The Soul Driver
- The Gentleman
Swords & Souls is an RPG game where we create our character, train them through various mini-games to improve their attributes (strength, vitality, luck, etc.). The main goal of the game is to go to the arena and defeat every enemy that stands in our way while earning money that we can spend on buying better equipment.
This game is also the largest and most addictive precisely because of its content. We build a house, a museum space, and we can even own a banker who passively earns while we are offline.
Rogue Soul and Rogue Soul 2 are separate titles but share the same DNA. Both are action runners with a stealth charm. The first Rogue Soul has a zone concept and we run infinitely, dealing with enemies by jumping or throwing knives we collect on the map. Rogue Soul 2, on the other hand, brings a more structured approach with individual levels, an organized menu, a bestiary, a loot system, and upgrades. The gameplay is forgiving, more accessible, and appealing for multiple playthroughs.
We conclude that the first installment is somewhat hardcore and can even be frustrating at times, while the second is more playful and complete, showing significant progress from the idea to execution.
The Soul Driver is the next game in the collection, and it is a game where we play as a maniacal driver who is in constant flight from the police. The car has its own health bar and takes damage as we go through construction sites, crash into other cars or some other obstacles, all while being relentlessly pursued by the police.
The special feature is that we can lure police vehicles into obstacles and destroy them, but the further we travel, the more patrols hit the road. Along with the police, we also face radars, fines, and annoying barricades, while upgrades (speed, brakes, tires, car durability) allow for longer drives and more earnings, and each new round brings a different mix of chaos and action.
The Gentleman is the last game from the Legacy Collection, and it is a puzzle platformer with missions and a clear goal, from start to finish. Along the way, you will search for keys, use portals, jump, glide with an umbrella, and activate switches. Although at first glance the game seems simple and somewhat tedious, the real challenges come after the first few levels where we get acquainted with the game mechanics. Each level also has a certain time we must beat to earn
an additional badge (golden hat). With 50 levels, The Gentleman offers an impressive amount of content for a flash game.
Conclusion
Swords & Souls Legacy Collection offers 5 games of different genres from driving to runners and puzzles to RPGs, each bringing a different perspective on what Flash games could have been. These games may not be perfect, nor will they suit every taste, but for those who grew up in an era when games were born out of pure passion, this collection is a true little gem.
