The original PlayStation is also known for games that are not actually games, but could be classified as educational and/or specialized software. For example, the most famous music editing tool Music and its second edition Music 2000 sold over a million copies combined. Alongside them, a number of titles were released that are not classic video games (such as quizzes, virtual picture books and coloring books for children, interactive comics, tools for creating video games, unofficial adult pirate films, gambling and card game simulations, language learning programs, etc.).
Guess the Flag! that we tried is one of those titles. It is a "game" of guessing flags from around the world. The goal of the game is to achieve the highest score possible! There are several types of challenges - guessing the flag by the name of the country, guessing the country by the appearance of the flag, typing the name of the country based on the displayed image, and guessing the country based on the displayed location. It is also possible to choose a region (continent) for flag recognition or start right away with the whole world. In addition to classic scoring, there is also a time attack mode.
The biggest complaint we have is the lack of multiplayer gameplay/competition (either on one console or online). The scoring system that exists seems quite basic to us. We also do not like that the game strictly punishes mistakes. Namely, game over follows after three wrong choices. Among other complaints, it is worth mentioning the menu design, which looks like the game was originally intended for mobile devices, but by chance that version was never released. After a few rounds of play, we realized that it wouldn't be bad to have additional challenging gameplay modes, and it is really a shame that there is no global player scoring system worldwide.
However, despite these complaints we have, we believe that this is an excellent "game" for anyone who loves puzzles and guessing games, and is also fascinated by the flags of countries and international organizations. With an affordable price of 5.49 euros, we definitely recommend it. In addition to versions for PlayStation consoles, Guess the Flag! is also available on PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
