The first Japan Report provides an overview of Japanese gaming news from the first half of May 2026.

In the first edition of the Japan Report, we bring you an overview of Japanese gaming news published between May 4 and May 15, 2026. The focus is on games from Japanese developers, anime adaptations, visual novels, retro releases, local Japanese editions, and sales results from the Japanese market.

STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT has received a release date. The new version of the well-known visual novel arrives on August 20, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game will support English, Japanese, and Chinese languages, further bringing this classic closer to a wider audience.

PATLABOR the Case Files is set to release this summer for PlayStation 5 and PC. It is a 3D action game based on the famous Patlabor series, featuring Japanese voice acting and text support for multiple languages, including English and Japanese. A physical PlayStation 5 edition will also be available in Japan, along with a special edition featuring the MODEROID Griffon the Case Files: Color Ver. model and an original soundtrack.

Echoes of the Flame has been announced for PC via Steam. The game is being developed by Japanese indie developer Konno Tobari and is a 2.5D narrative turn-based RPG created using the RPG Developer Bakin tool. The Japanese edition is planned for the period from November to December 2026, while the English and simplified Chinese localization is expected to arrive in 2027.

Yomawari: The Long Night Collection suddenly arrived on PlayStation 5 in Japan. The collection includes Yomawari: Night Alone and Yomawari: Midnight Shadows, and is available through the Japanese PlayStation Store. This is also the first time that Yomawari: Night Alone can be played on a home PlayStation console that is not portable. A western release of the PlayStation 5 version has not yet been confirmed.

Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics has received a new wave of games. The catalog has been expanded with V-Tetris, Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, and Vertical Force, while Virtual Fishing is additionally available in Japan. This continues the expansion of retro offerings on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with one small difference between the Japanese and western catalogs.

Expelled from Paradise: The Stellar Angel has been announced for Nintendo Switch and PC. It is a new visual novel that continues the story of the anime film Expelled from Paradise. The game is published by Toei Animation and developed by Studio51. The release is planned for this winter, with support for English and Japanese languages.

My Merry May will also receive a PlayStation 4 version. The remaster of the collection of science fiction romantic visual novels will be released digitally on June 25, 2026, for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The collection includes My Merry May, My Merry Maybe, and additional scenarios Beginning, Metempsychosis, and Epilogue.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth series has surpassed three million units shipped and digital sales worldwide. This figure includes Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory. The series is currently available at a significant discount, further demonstrating the lasting interest in Digimon RPG releases.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok has received new promotional materials and additional character information. Cygames and Cygames Osaka introduced Gallanzu and Maglielle through new “Meet the Crew” trailers, while the expansion release is scheduled for July 9, 2026, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Japanese sales chart showed the continued strong performance of the game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. From April 27 to May 10, 2026, the game sold an additional 299,619 physical copies in Japan, surpassing a total of one million physical copies. On the hardware side, the Nintendo Switch 2 was the clear best-selling console during that period.
