KÖLN — Wargaming officially presented its latest game, World of Tanks: HEAT, during the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 event. It is a standalone, free-to-play tactical shooter in vehicles, bringing a refresh to the franchise by mixing tank combat with elements of hero shooters. We had the opportunity to talk to the developers, so here are some details.

Accelerated pace in an alternative reality

The action takes place in a post-WW2 alternative reality, where conflict escalates under the influence of technological development and global tensions. Instead of classic tanks, players will control experimental vehicles — hero-tanks — with unique abilities and distinct customization.

The game is dynamic and fun. Surprisingly fluid and smooth to play. We were very impressed with the showcased parts of the game behind the scenes. We have no doubt that the game will achieve a large fanbase, and likely grab a piece of the pie from similar games like R6S.

Hero-enhanced Agents

In each round, ten players participate against ten opponents (10v10), with clearly defined roles. Each tank has a specific ability that can turn the tide of battle. Players act as Agents, specially trained pilots, whose abilities further enrich the combat style.

This somewhat resembles a tried-and-true recipe that brings success, and we have seen it in Rainbow Six Siege. Thus, the approach to agents is quite similar, further introducing diversification of gameplay and variety in play styles. This, in turn, extends the lifespan of the game. It is evident that we can expect updates (paid or free) in the form of new agents to be added in the future. Along with agents, various modes and modifications of the same agents will surely be added to ensure that even minor details contribute to the diversity of gameplay.

Visual and Technical Leap

World of Tanks: HEAT is built on a completely new, proprietary Wargaming game engine, designed to provide impressive graphics, cinematic environmental commands, and a dynamic visual experience.

In other words, the game looks fantastic. We just hope it will be well optimized so that it can run on weaker computers. Knowing Wargaming - we have no doubt they will try to do just that, in order to capture as large a percentage of the gaming population as possible. But it is certain that you won't be able to run this game on a toaster. :)

Cross-Platform and Progression

This is the first Wargaming title that will launch simultaneously on multiple platforms, with full cross-play and cross-progression, including PC (Wargaming Game Center and Steam), Steam Deck, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Free-to-Win model and monetization

The game comes as free-to-play, but Wargaming has emphasized the philosophy of “free-to-win” — success depends on the player's skill, not the depth of their wallet. Monetization will be based solely on cosmetics, a battle pass, and time-saver options, without a direct pay-to-win model.

Classic game modes, new extremes

Kill Confirmed, Domination, and Conquest will be adapted for the tank arena, providing familiar gameplay frameworks but with a completely new dynamic approach.

What Wargaming says about the game

Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming, states:

World of Tanks: HEAT is our bold vision for the franchise — it brings a completely new experience of tank combat, with new environments, mechanics, a faster pace, and cutting-edge technology.”

Artyom Yantsevich, product director, adds:

“This is an important moment for our team. We look forward to collaborating with players in shaping the future of HEAT.”

World of Tanks: HEAT announces a radical turning point for the franchise: from sluggish, realistic tank skirmishes to fast, dynamic, and impactful battles. With technical advancements, cross-platform support, and innovative gameplay elements — it has the potential to attract both veterans and new players. The release date has not yet been confirmed, but it is already possible to add the game to wish lists on digital platforms and follow the official website wotheat.com for further information.
