For a generation of gamers who grew up with the GameCube and the original Xbox, few games evoke as much nostalgia as Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. And according to the latest rumors, one of the most beloved Godzilla titles could soon get a second life.
Famous insider billbil-kun, who has a very good track record when it comes to gaming leaks, claims that Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is currently in development and is expected to arrive later this year. What makes the whole story even more interesting is the fact that the project is reportedly being worked on again by Pipeworks, the studio that developed the original game back in 2002, while the publisher is Atari.
According to leaked information, the release is planned for November 3, which is quite a bold move considering that just two weeks later the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI is set to arrive.
The original Destroy All Monsters Melee was everything Godzilla fans could wish for in the early 2000s. Huge monsters, city destruction, and brutal battles between the most famous kaiju from the Toho universe. The story followed an alien race called Vortaak that takes control of Earth's monsters to conquer the planet. The only monster that manages to escape mind control becomes humanity's last hope and sets out to confront the other monsters before the final showdown with Mechagodzilla. Although the game initially offered only a few available characters, impressive roster of 12 monsters could be unlocked through gameplay, including Godzilla, Anguirus, Megalon, and many other fan favorites.
If the rumors are true, the remaster will not just be a graphical upgrade. We can reportedly expect completely revamped visuals, a new content unlocking system, additional single-player campaigns for each monster, and perhaps the most important novelty of all - online multiplayer. This is something fans have been wishing for since the original release. Local multiplayer was one of the biggest attractions of the game over two decades ago, and the possibility of online battles between kaiju could significantly extend the lifespan of the remaster.
According to the same source, the game is expected to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, while a PC version is also reportedly in the works, although it has not been confirmed yet.
As someone who remembers the time when Godzilla games were a regular occurrence on consoles, I must admit that this rumor excites me quite a bit. The modern gaming industry rarely gives a chance to such arcade, fun, and completely unpretentious titles.
And honestly, sometimes all we need is just that - to choose our favorite monster, level a few skyscrapers to the ground, and settle disputes with fists the size of buses.
