Colossus - Eternal Blight at first glance appears to be a title that understands the appeal of modern pixel-art action adventures very well. The game takes us to the kingdom of Eireos, a world that is slowly crumbling under the influence of a mysterious plague known as Blight. At the center of the story is Lucian, a young man who embarks on an adventure not because he is the chosen hero, but because he wants to find and save his brother Lance. This more personal approach to the story gives the game a warmer tone despite the dark fantasy setting. Visually, Colossus relies on hand-crafted pixel art, but it doesn't feel like a project that lives solely off nostalgia. The animations, effects, and world design suggest a game that aims to combine retro aesthetics with a more modern pace of combat.
The most interesting aspect so far seems to be the combat system, which emphasizes precise movement, parrying, dodging, and using the environment. The developers cite games like Hyper Light Drifter and Chrono Trigger as inspirations, which is felt in the attempt to blend action, exploration, and storytelling. Alongside the main quest, lore, puzzles, mini-bosses, and decisions that should have consequences for the kingdom have been announced. Of course, it remains to be seen how well all of this will be integrated as a whole, but the initial materials leave the impression of a serious indie project.
