The unusual indie fishing game Scale the Depths has received an official release date. The Canadian studio Glass Gecko Games and publisher Pretty Soon have confirmed that the game will arrive on Steam on May 28, 2026.
What started as a small game jam project has since turned into one of the more interesting indie surprises on Steam. The demo version has been played by over 210 thousand players, with 97 percent positive ratings, nearly 115 thousand wishlists, millions of views on YouTube, and even the emergence of AI copies trying to imitate its concept.
Scale the Depths is based on a very simple, yet obviously addictive gameplay loop: catch fish, clean them, serve customers, earn money, upgrade equipment, and dive even deeper. Players take on the role of a small fish-selling robot who must satisfy increasingly demanding and quirky customers.
At first glance, it appears to be a relaxed fishing game, but the gameplay quickly expands into a combination of precision, optimization, exploration, and constant decision-making. Fish are caught through careful movement, then prepared through cleaning and cutting mechanics, and then served to customers to earn money for better tools, equipment, and further exploration of underwater locations.
The full version of the game brings significantly more content compared to the original game jam version and demo. Players can expect new locations, more types of fish, a deeper progression system, hidden underwater secrets, additional customization options, collectible items, and surprisingly many lore elements for a game about preparing fish.
Among the main features are cleaning fish with various tools, from ordinary knives to katanas, feeding unusual customers with very specific requests, exploring four locations inspired by real places like Loch Ness and Point Nemo, finding messages in bottles, hidden paths and treasures, and upgrading rods, hooks, boats, knives, and the appearance of the main robot.
