Thrown back into the fire of Mount Doom

Amazon has announced that it has canceled the development of an MMO game that was supposed to be set in the literary and film world of Lord of the Rings. The cancellation was confirmed by Amazon Games head Jeff Grattis in an interview with Eurogamer.

However, not everything is so bleak as despite the cancellation of the MMO title, Grattis reassured the audience that Amazon will continue to work on a game related to The Lord of the Rings. Eurogamer learned about the project's end from confidential sources, after which it sent an inquiry to Amazon as part of a larger investigation into the use of artificial intelligence and the cancellation of the Trident project.

Grattis gave a brief response to their inquiry: "Our creative team continues to explore a new gaming experience that will do justice to Tolkien's world, we are closely collaborating with Middle Earth and are still excited about the license."

Amazon announced The Lord of the Rings MMO in May 2023 and has not revealed new information since then, with the game entering early production a few months before the major wave of cancellations in October 2025. The development was reportedly canceled for several reasons, one of which was revealed in an internal memo from Amazon Games and Twitch vice president Steven Bloom, who stated that the cancellations occurred because it was decided to stop working on proprietary games, especially those in the MMO genre.
