Sunken Sky attempts to combine metroidvania structure with RPG elements and anime aesthetics, offering a colorful 2D adventure through an interconnected world. The game follows multiple protagonists whose stories intertwine as they explore various biomes – from mountains to forests and underground areas.
At first glance, the game's biggest asset is its visual style. Hand-drawn graphics and vibrant locations make a good impression, and the world feels diverse and encourages exploration. The gameplay relies on classic metroidvania principles – unlocking new abilities and returning to earlier zones – with the addition of mini-games and RPG progression that bring some freshness.
Combat against enemies and bosses works solidly, but doesn't bring anything particularly new. The control of multiple characters with different abilities adds some depth, but the execution sometimes feels underdeveloped. This is where it feels like a smaller indie project with a limited budget.
The biggest problem of the game is the lack of "polish." Although the ideas are there, the execution can feel uneven – from the pacing of the gameplay to the technical side. Early impressions and player comments suggest that the experience is still seeking balance and additional refinement.
Ultimately, Sunken Sky is an interesting attempt to merge metroidvania and JRPG elements, with an emphasis on atmosphere and exploration. However, while it has potential, it currently feels more like a solid indie adventure for genre fans than a title that will stand out among the competition.
