Chronicles of the Wolf is a nostalgic metroidvania achievement from 2025 that carries clear allusions to the classics of the genre. The game puts you in the role of Mateo Lombardo, the last student of the Rose Cross order, and takes you on a dangerous quest for the infamous “Beast of Gévaudan” — a dark mythical creature that terrorizes the French countryside.

The game's strength lies in its unusual atmosphere: a combination of gothic tone, historical-fantasy motifs, and a blend of action and exploration provides an impressive experience. The combat system and character progression deliver an authentic “old-school” Metroidvania feel — with weapons, sub-weapons, powers, and abilities that open new paths and secrets.

However, the game has its shortcomings: controls can feel stiff, weapon or tool swapping can be clumsy, and navigation and the map — lacking the quality of life features of modern games — often leave room for frustration. On top of that, tests of patience are not uncommon: deaths and reloads in large maps can break the rhythm, especially with awkwardly positioned save points.

In conclusion: Chronicles of the Wolf is not a revolutionary metroidvania, but it is — if you are looking for a dark, atmospheric, and “retro” adventure — a very solid and passionately crafted achievement. The game is particularly suitable for those who appreciate old-school 2D action and don’t mind the occasional trap and hiccup.
