Sonic the Hedgehog is celebrating a big 35 years this year, which means the blue hedgehog is officially old enough to have back pain. SEGA officially kicked off the anniversary celebration earlier this year, announcing that throughout 2026, new content, collaborations, collectible products, and fan experiences related to one of the most recognizable mascots in video game history will be rolling out.
The latest concrete part of this celebration is the SONIC 35th Official Fan Meeting Tour in Tokyo, an official fan event that will take place on June 21, 2026, at SEGA's headquarters in Tokyo. Entry to the event will be free, but with prior registration and a lottery selection system, as even Sonic apparently can't escape bureaucracy. Registrations are open until May 10, 2026, at 23:59 Japan time, and selected fans should be contacted from May 20 onwards.
According to the information released so far, the event will include discussions about the history of the Sonic series, behind-the-scenes development anecdotes, Q&A sessions with fans, and appearances by key members of the Sonic team. Confirmed guests include Kazuyuki Hoshino, the creative director associated with the Sonic franchise, and Tomoya Ohtani, a long-time composer and sound director of the series.
This is not an isolated event. SEGA is treating Sonic's 35th anniversary as a year-long campaign. An official anniversary page was launched back in January, and "Sonic Rewind" was announced, a sort of journey through the franchise's history via official channels. Sonic's social profiles have already revisited different eras of the series throughout the campaign, including the 2010s, 2000s, and finally the 90s.
One of the more interesting anniversary projects is Sonic the Hedgehog Presents: The Chaotix Casefiles, a new narrative audio podcast that SEGA launched at the end of January. It is a noir detective adventure featuring the Chaotix Detective Agency team, namely Vector, Espio, and Charmy, with Sonic making an appearance. The series debuted on January 27, 2026, and SEGA presents it as an expansion of the Sonic world into a new medium.
Of course, many will wonder if Sonic's 35th anniversary will bring any major gaming announcements. So far, SEGA has not officially confirmed a new major main Sonic title for 2026. For now, officially confirmed anniversary content, fan events, audio projects, collaborations, and additional activities throughout the year have been announced, but not a new major game.
Sonic first debuted in 1991, and in the meantime, he has grown from SEGA's counterpart to Mario into one of the biggest gaming icons ever. He has survived great games, strange games, terrible games, memes, movies, redesigns, fan wars... So the 35th anniversary is not just a nostalgic pat on the back, but a reminder that Sonic still has an audience that follows him through all his phases, from Mega Drive classics to modern 3D experiments and cinematic success.
