Dynasty Warriors: Origins (Nintendo Switch 2) - a return to the roots with modern tactical depth

The Dynasty Warriors series has been building its identity on the simple yet addictive formula of “1 against 1,000” for over two decades, but over time, the repetition of the same battles and stories has left a sense of stagnation. Dynasty Warriors: Origins aims to change that. This is not just another sequel in the series, but a kind of reset of the franchise that returns to its roots while interpreting them through modern design, emphasized tactics, and a more serious tone.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version offers a complete experience tailored for the portable and hybrid console, focusing on stable performance and readability of chaotic battlefields.

A Return to the Three Kingdoms from a New Perspective

The story takes us back to the period of the Three Kingdoms, but this time through the eyes of a nameless protagonist who has lost their memory. The narrative begins with the collapse of the Han dynasty and the Yellow Turban Rebellion, gradually leading us to key historical conflicts such as the Battle of Chibi.

Unlike earlier games, the narration is more personal and serious. The focus is not only on great historical figures like Cao Cao, Liu Bei, or Sun Jian, but also on motivations, internal conflicts, and the consequences of war on ordinary people. It remains a historical drama with a dose of romanticization, but significantly more mature and coherent than we are used to in the series.

Gameplay: Less Mindless “Button Mashing”, More Thoughtfulness

The biggest change comes in the gameplay. While the core idea of mass battles remains intact, the combat system now strongly rewards timing, positioning, and defense.

In addition to standard normal and strong attacks, key elements include:

  • blocking and parrying (with precise windows for counter-attacks),
  • evading with rewards for perfect timing,
  • Battle Arts and Special Arts that serve as tactical responses to dangerous enemy attacks,
  • Assault system, which allows for devastating finishing moves when you break the opponent's “Fortitude”.

Fights against officers are no longer just a visual spectacle, but require attention and planning, while regular soldiers in large formations can become a serious threat if underestimated.

Morale, tactics, and war as a system

Dynasty Warriors: Origins strongly emphasizes battlefield simulation. The systems of morale, unit courage, large formations, and enemy “Grand Tactics” make every battle dynamic.

If you ignore the state of the battlefield and go off on your own “heroic quest,” you can easily lose allies, bases, and the entire battle. Using Tactics commands, smartly responding to enemy plans, and supporting allied commanders are often crucial for victory.

This is the first Dynasty Warriors that truly feels like a tactical action game, rather than just hack & slash.

Progression, weapons, and RPG elements

Character progression is based on ranks, skills, and weapon proficiency system. Nine different types of weapons not only serve aesthetics but significantly change the gameplay style and available abilities.

There are also:

  • gems for additional bonuses,
  • gear and accessories that change stats,
  • relationships with heroes that unlock special events and techniques,
  • world map with missions, cities, skirmishes, and RPG content.

Replay value is further enhanced by different factions (Wei, Wu, Shu) and branching story endings.

Visual and audio impression on Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 version surprises with its stability. Although it cannot compete with more powerful home consoles in raw graphics, the number of soldiers on screen, battlefield readability, and fluidity remain at a very high level.

The artistic style is more serious and “earthy,” and the character design and animations clearly reflect the intention of a realistic portrayal of war. The music skillfully combines traditional motifs with modern orchestral arrangements, while sound effects further emphasize the chaos of battle.

Drawbacks

Despite all the improvements, the game still may not appeal to everyone. Those who enjoyed the completely relaxed “clearing” of thousands of enemies without thinking might feel that the pace is slower and more demanding. Additionally, the mission structure over time shows familiar patterns, and learning all the systems can be daunting for complete newcomers.

Final Impression

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is not just another sequel but is also the most serious and ambitious attempt to redefine the series. The combination of tactical depth, a stronger story, and a modernized combat system manages to breathe new life into the familiar formula.

For fans of the series, this is the refresh they have long awaited, and for new players, potentially the best entry point into the world of Dynasty Warriors.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5) - Very Good

Dynasty Warriors: Origins offers one of the highest quality experiences in the history of the series. It is just shy of reaching the status of an outstanding game, but undoubtedly represents the best version of “1 vs. 1,000” action to date - even on the hybrid Nintendo console.
