After the success of Nioh (2017) and Nioh 2 (2020), the third installment brings a completely new story set after the events of the previous games. While Nioh 2 served as a prequel, Nioh 3 continues the main narrative line and puts the player in the role of Tokugawa Takechiyu, the heir of a powerful dynasty, whose mission is to become Shogun and save Japan from the threat of yokai creatures.
Unlike the previous games, Nioh 3 offers a completely new perspective. Players will take on the role of Tokugawa Takechiyu, the grandson of the famous Tokugawa Ieyasu, who faces the threat of yokai creatures and the fate of Japan. The story spans various historical epochs – from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period – and merges historical events with rich Japanese mythology.
The main threat in the game is The Crucible, a disaster that threatens to destroy the world, and Takechiyu must find a way to become Shogun and save Japan from supernatural doom.
Evolution of Gameplay
Nioh 3 retains the recognizable hardcore action RPG style with an emphasis on precise combat mechanics, but also introduces a range of novelties:
- Samurai and Ninja Styles: Players can fluidly switch between two combat approaches, opening up new tactical possibilities.
- Open Fields: Unlike the linear missions in previous installments, Nioh 3 offers broader areas for exploration.
- Guardian Spirits and Yokai Forms: The return of key mechanics that allow transformation and the use of supernatural powers.
- Multiplayer: Along with cooperative mode, the game also offers competitive clan battles.
