The end of an era

After a long period of support, one of the biggest gaming franchises is finally turning a new page – Call of Duty will no longer be released on PlayStation 4.

Activision has officially confirmed that this year's installment of the series will not be developed for PlayStation 4, thus ending years of support for the old generation of consoles. This closes an impressive chapter for Call of Duty – a total of 13 installments have been released on the PlayStation 4 console, including last year's title, which was the last in the series for that platform.

This decision comes after a series of rumors that the new game might still arrive on the old generation, but the official channels of the franchise quickly denied this with a clear message: the new game is simply not in development for PlayStation 4. In practice, this means that the series is finally fully turning to the current generation of consoles, such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While some players will be left behind, this move opens the door to advancements in technology, graphics, and gameplay systems that have so far been limited by older hardware.

Interestingly, Call of Duty remained on PlayStation 4 significantly longer than was the case with previous generations, which further demonstrates how slow this transition between generations has been. The new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 is set to arrive at the end of the year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. As for 2027, Activision has announced a new beginning for the series, and it wouldn't surprise us if they are working on the first next-gen Call of Duty video game for the next generation of consoles (PlayStation 6, Xbox Next)
