Is that a game?

The publisher CRITICAL REFLEX and indie developer IODINE have officially confirmed that the surreal narrative adventure Burden Street Station will arrive on Steam on May 21, 2026.

The new game is inspired by classic adventures from the 90s, and the developers particularly highlight the retro visuals, unusual humor, and shapeshifting mechanics that guide players through a surreal world filled with strange characters, cosmic mysteries, and a “liminal” atmosphere.

Burden Street Station is described as a story about memories, loss, and community set in an unusual universe where human memories are collected and sold as living books to celestial beings. However, when God mysteriously disappears and the entire production system halts, it is up to the players to uncover what actually happened.

The main protagonist is an ordinary librarian accompanied by Memo, a living book that reluctantly becomes his companion during the investigation. The uniqueness of the game lies in the shapeshifting system during conversations, where players can collect different personalities through exploration and communication and use them to unlock new dialogues and develop the story.

The developers state that players will explore bizarre locations such as Lotown, Pipelines, and Hitown, a world filled with impossible architecture, strange rules, and eccentric inhabitants.

Among the main features of the game are:

  • retro atmosphere inspired by 90s adventures

  • shapeshifting system during dialogues

  • surreal sci-fi world and “cosmic opera” story

  • exploration of memories and different personalities

  • unusual characters and humorous dialogues

IODINE, the game's creator, hails from Ireland and was originally known as a musician before turning to video game development. The studio describes its projects as a blend of emotional themes, bizarre humor, and experimental storytelling.

Burden Street Station arrives on Steam on May 21, while a demo version is already available for testing.
