If we go back to the early nineties when the FPS genre began to take shape, it is easy to see how many genre series from that era, no matter how popular they were at the time, failed to make the leap into modernity successfully. Similarly, we can see how one did, and to this day this was further confirmed when Doom was released.
After more than ten years of waiting for a new installment in the series, the same name was taken as the first installment from 1993, quite simply – Doom. Although it originally had a four behind the name, it also had development issues after which it was removed. Perhaps it was for the best, as the game gained the freedom to become a new beginning, which it actually was. It is telling that only one person worked on both games – Kevin Cloud. All the other legendary names that created the original Doom were no longer there; it was time for some new people on the path to legendary status.
It was also a completely different time. In the mid-teens, when someone said FPS, the first thought would be multiplayer gaming; that somehow became the industry standard. Doom had it, but that was not its forte; it was a frenetic and fantastic single player experience. That very decision somehow managed to capture the spirit of what Doom was when it was created. Faster than before with a very fun arsenal of weapons, success was not guaranteed, but it came. They made a good game, and it was rewarded.
Doom has since then received two new installments in the series. In fact, one is a predecessor, and in it, they completely discarded multiplayer. The team found what works and continued to build on that.
