Microsoft plans to significantly improve the performance of the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld device by introducing new Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) technology. It is an AI system for increasing performance that should be available in a preview version as early as April 2026.
Auto SR uses artificial intelligence to render games at a lower resolution and then upscale them back to a higher resolution with the help of an AI model. In this way, it reduces the load on the GPU, while the visual quality of the image tends to remain at a high level.
The specialty of this technology is that it works at the level of the operating system, which means that developers do not need to implement support in their games separately - the system can automatically improve performance in compatible titles.
According to Microsoft, Auto SR can deliver up to 30% more frames per second, depending on the game and settings. In a demo with Forza Horizon 5, performance went from about 35 FPS to about 51 FPS when the technology was turned on.
Currently, Auto SR supports games that use DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, and the function is specifically intended for the Ally X model because it uses the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with a built-in NPU to process AI tasks.
