It seems that the collaboration between Universal Pictures and Illumination has once again borne fruit. According to the five-day weekend box office analysis, Super Mario Galaxy Movie has already grossed $372.5 million on Sunday, making it the biggest opening of the year, a remarkable achievement considering that the budget was $110 million.
As predicted, the sequel did not beat the original, which also earned 387.8 million dollars in the same period during its opening. Galaxy's score also helped the series become the first animated series to gross more than $350 million during its opening and do so twice. For Illumination, this is the second biggest opening for any of their films and the fourth biggest opening in the USA behind Zootopia 2, Moana 2 and The Super Mario Bros Movie. This is Universal's fifth biggest weekend in a career that has lasted for 113 years.
As always, there is a certain discrepancy between critics and the audience, so the film currently has a rating of 42% from critics and 89% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
