The gaming industry is full of successful franchises that get sequels year after year. But there are also those games that, despite their quality and popularity, have remained "forgotten" - without a sequel, without a reboot and without any plans to return. Sometimes due to poor sales, sometimes due to a change in studio focus, and sometimes simply because the industry has moved on.
In this special, we bring you five PlayStation games that deserved a sequel, but - very likely - will never get one.
The Order: 1886
When it came out, this PlayStation exclusive garnered a lot of attention for its amazing graphics and cinematic approach. Victorian London, werewolves and a secret organization - everything sounded like a recipe for a big hit.
However, the game was met with mixed reactions. Criticisms were directed at the short duration and too much focus on the "cinematic" experience instead of gameplay. Although it had the potential to expand into a larger franchise, the negative reception practically killed all plans for a sequel.
Today, The Order: 1886 remains an example of a game with enormous potential that was never used.
Days Gone
Although initially met with a lukewarm reception, Days Gone eventually gained a large fan base. The open-world zombie adventure with an engine and an emphasis on survival offered something different compared to the competition.
Problem? Sony never gave the green light for a sequel.
Despite solid sales and later more positive feedback from players, the Days Gone 2 project was reportedly rejected. The reasons are different - from initial criticism to strategic decisions within the company. Today, the chance for a sequel is minimal, although fans are still clamoring for a return.
Driveclub
Driveclub had a difficult start, marked by technical problems and delays. However, over time it became one of the most interesting arcade racing games on PlayStation, with excellent weather effects and a focus on the online community.
Unfortunately, the development studio has been closed and the game has been withdrawn from sale.
This practically means that Driveclub as a franchise no longer exists. While it had the potential to become PlayStation's answer to Forza, it all ended faster than anyone expected.
Bloodborne
This is perhaps the biggest "mystery" among PlayStation fans. Bloodborne, the action RPG studio FromSoftware, is considered one of the best titles of its generation. The dark gothic atmosphere, brutal difficulty and unique world design have left a huge mark on the gaming community.
And that is precisely why the absence of a sequel is so strange.
Despite its immense popularity and cult status, Bloodborne has never received an official announcement of a sequel, nor any serious indication that it is in development. FromSoftware turned to other projects, while Sony is silent about this IP.
Fans have been asking for Bloodborne 2 for years, and even a remaster or a PlayStation 5 version... but so far - nothing.
Knack
Knack was one of the launch titles for the PlayStation 4 and was supposed to become the new big platformer franchise for Sony. The game offered simple gameplay, an interesting visual style and the potential to attract a wider audience.
And although it got a sequel (Knack 2), the franchise completely disappeared after that.
Despite an attempt to improve the series, the interest of the audience was not great enough to justify further sequels. Today, Knack remains an example of a project that had the potential to become a PlayStation mascot - but never achieved that status.
