Nvidia presented an ambitious vision of the future of graphics technologies at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026. According to the company, future generations of graphics cards could bring even 1,000,000 times better performance in path tracing compared to the older Pascal architecture.

Path tracing is an advanced version of ray tracing that simulates the behavior of light in a much more realistic way. The technology enables more accurate reflections, shadows and global lighting, which can make scenes in games look almost photorealistic. However, this rendering method is extremely demanding on hardware.

Nvidia states that modern RTX cards have already achieved more than 10,000 times better path tracing performance compared to older Pascal GPUs. Much of that progress comes thanks to technologies like RTX ray tracing cores, Tensor cores, and AI systems like DLSS.

The company believes that further progress will be possible precisely through the combination of artificial intelligence and neural rendering, and not only through the raw power of chips. It is expected that such a technological leap could arrive with future GPU architectures, potentially during the next few generations of graphics cards.

If these projections come true, path tracing could become a standard in video games in the future, bringing a level of visual realism that can only be seen today mostly in film production.
