Microsoft revealed a new game development strategy for the next generation of Xbox consoles at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). According to the company's presentation, the games for the upcoming Xbox – codenamed Project Helix – will be developed primarily on PC, and only then adapted to consoles and cloud platforms.
This approach shows Microsoft's intention to further connect the Xbox and PC ecosystem. Development begins on desktop computers, followed by optimization for consoles, which should allow developers to port games more easily and projects to be more scalable.
Project Helix is increasingly being described as a hybrid between console and PC. The new Xbox should be able to run both Xbox and PC games, and strong integration with Windows is part of Microsoft's long-term strategy to create a unique gaming platform.
If this vision comes true, the future Xbox could function almost like a gaming PC in a console case, further reducing the gap between PC and console gaming in the coming years.
