Sony is reportedly preparing a new AI feature for PlayStation 5 that would automatically create highlight videos and key moments from players' gameplay sessions. The information comes from a new PlayStation patent filed back in 2023 and publicly released this month.
According to the patent description, the system would track and analyze user gameplay and recognize “important moments” such as boss victories, high scores, spectacular moves, or other significant events during play. After that, the artificial intelligence would automatically generate short video clips or screenshots ready to be shared on social media.
Particularly interesting is the fact that the AI could “learn” the individual user's play style over time and tailor the highlight content to their preferences. In other words, the system could recognize what is most important to a particular player - competitive moments, cinematic scenes, or rare achievements.
Part of the community on Reddit reacted skeptically, pointing out that PlayStation 5 already has a very simple system for saving the last minutes of gameplay by pressing the Share button. Some users also express concerns about privacy and the ability to disable AI options.
This news comes just a few days after Sony publicly spoke about greater integration of AI technology within the PlayStation ecosystem. President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Hideaki Nishino stated that the company sees artificial intelligence as a “powerful tool” for game development, improving animations, content recommendations, and new types of gameplay experiences.
For now, it is not confirmed whether this AI highlight feature will actually come to PlayStation 5 or the future PlayStation 6, but the patent clearly shows the direction in which Sony is thinking about the future of sharing gameplay content.
