Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV Online is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 as early as August 2026, marking the arrival of one of the most popular MMORPGs on the Nintendo platform.
The announcement was revealed during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026, where producer and director Naoki Yoshida personally demonstrated the game on the new console.
Free start, but subscription remains
The Switch 2 version will receive approximately one month of free early access period, which will serve to test the servers and stability.
After that, the game will switch to the standard subscription model – but here comes the main difference.
Unlike existing versions (PC, PlayStation, Xbox), where one subscription covers all platforms, the Switch 2 version will require a separate subscription.
However, there are some concessions:
existing subscribers receive 50% off the new subscription
Nintendo Switch Online is not required to play
Cross-play and existing characters remain
The good news is that the game will support cross-play and cross-progression, meaning players can continue with their existing characters and progress on the Switch 2.
A new beginning for FFXIV on Nintendo
The arrival of the game on Switch 2 marks an important moment for the franchise, which has been expanding to new platforms for years. The Nintendo console version will include content up to the current expansions, and it has already been confirmed that the upcoming Evercold will also be available on that platform.
Although the additional subscription will surely spark discussions among players, the fact that Final Fantasy XIV can now be played in handheld mode represents a significant step for one of the most successful MMO titles of today.
