After separating from the studio Pearl Abyss

CCP Games (EVE Online) has announced that it has changed its name to Fenris Creations after separating from Pearl Abyss (Black Desert Online, Crimson Desert). Fenris has also shared the information that it is starting a collaboration with Google DeepMind, which is focused on understanding artificial intelligence in complex and dynamic systems.

"EVE Online was developed for resilience and only functions if there is a desire to move forward into the future. This change gives us direct ownership, responsibility, and independence to invest in worlds that will grow in the coming decades. We are grateful for the partnership and ongoing support provided by Pearl Abyss over these seven and a half years. EVE Online exists today because of the pioneering mindset, patience, and trust between players and the development team. Our new structure and partners allow us to continue the legacy by constantly developing this living world and discovering what it can become," said the head of Fenris Creations, Hilmar Veigar.

Demis Hassabis (CEO and co-founder of Google DeepMind) added: "Video games have always been a big part of my life; I've been a gamer since childhood and started my career designing and programming complex AI simulation titles like Theme Park. They have also been part of some of DeepMind's greatest discoveries (Atari DQN, AlphaGo, AlphaStar, and SIMA) as they provide an excellent field for developing and testing AI algorithms. I have known Hilmar for years and admire his work, and I am excited to collaborate with him and the fantastic team at Fenris Creations to create new gaming experiences and advanced research in artificial intelligence in a player-focused and complex universe like EVE Online."

Birgir Mar Ragnarsson (board member of Fenris Creations and co-founder of Omega Ventures) also reflected on the partnership: "I have closely followed CCP's progress over the past years and have great respect for what they have achieved. As a board member, I have seen firsthand how this company operates when focused on a goal and its fulfillment. We are entering the next phase from a position of strength, experienced leadership, and strong partners. I look forward to playing a role in this journey and supporting Fenris Creations as they continue to make history."

What does all this mean for EVE Online?

Fenris Creations is entering the next phase with strong momentum in its sci-fi universe. EVE Online closed 2025 with its best results in several years, including a record November and Q4, which became the second-largest financial period in the game's 20-year history. This iconic MMORPG with spaceships has exceeded internal expectations and is a good testament to a live-service game that has remained strong and has now entered its third decade. Its position is further solidified by upcoming titles: EVE Vanguard (extraction FPS) and EVE Frontier (survival). The company remains profitable with over $70 million according to last year's report, and player engagement has enabled continued long-term investment.
