The well-known game review and rating site Metacritic announced its 16. report on the most popular game publishers for the year 2025. The king of the RPG and JRPG genre, the Japanese Square Enix, found itself on the throne. It is the first time for Square to be on the throne itself, and according to Metacritic over the last year they released as many as nine titles and all of them had positive ratings (the highest average was 84).
The top rated game was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PC version) with a Metacritic score of 90, followed by: Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles (88), Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake (88) and Octopath Traveler 0 (84).
"Various Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles received high ratings last year and into early 2026, and even some underdog titles like SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered received critical acclaim." They said from Metacritic.
In the creation of the list, the publishers were ranked according to the point system as in previous years and it is based on four key factors. The most attention went to the titles that were talked about a lot, but those with a good grade (at least 75), bad (49 or lower) and excellent (90 or higher) were also considered. Publishers that had five or more different titles were considered candidates, and the report itself does not include mobile game publishers.
In addition to Square in previous years, the following were crowned with this prestigious title: Sega (2025), Capcom (2024), Sony (2023) and Microsoft (2022). The rest of the list was made up of the following publishers:
