Today we have a bunch of traditional "trading" simulators on the market that rely on the repetitiveness of doing tasks and satisfying customers who relentlessly want to get their desired product. This is the first simulator of this kind that I have played; a pawn shop where a person starts from scratch and tries to make the best deal possible for future potential clients. Although it doesn't look like that at first glance, Pawnbroker Simulator is a sufficiently complex and layered game that "forces" you to play it to the end. In addition, it is quite self-aware - it persistently warns you about the "elephant in the room" such as PawnStars, the American pawn shop that marked an entire decade and popularized bartering and the science of collecting. "Be careful not to get sued for name theft" is one of the first sentences of this game that introduces us to the whole story. I would say that this game is much deeper than the already mentioned simulators, but let's comment on everything together.

Presentation - good atmosphere and good enough visuals

As for the presentation, each game introduces the player to its essence through the atmosphere and graphic components, and Pawnbroker simulator does this very well. The plot where we are at the beginning of the game looks in a very bad state, and we as players have the opportunity to "refresh" it with a new sign, name and color. The game gives enough "tools" to the player to present his window in the best possible light with a limited budget, and the player must know how to allocate the little money he gets at the beginning of the game. The overall atmosphere is satisfactory, in the background we can hear pleasant music that guides us through the work of the pawn shop.

The only complaint about this part of the game is the bugs that are related to the "saves"; sometimes you can't flash your save file to continue the game. But the good thing is that the developers at Next Sky Games are very quick to fix problems and listen to their players.

All in all, the presentation of the game is satisfactory and good enough for a simulator like this, and I would say it looks better than 90 percent of other "commercial" simulators on the market.

Gameplay - Bargaining, Estimates and Profits

As I already mentioned, the goal of the player in Pawnbroker Simulator is to build a good relationship with clients, buy good collectibles and antiques that we can later make money from. This is the core of the game, and at the beginning the player must think carefully about how to approach his business. Namely, when you manage to renovate the shop and bring it to a "normal" state, the player has already invested a lot of funds by then, which he must return somehow. This is where we come to the first obstacle - how to buy things from clients and make a profit?

Pawnbroker Simulator has found a solution - the player can go out of the shop and collect scraps that have been repurposed into things we can sell. Through the game, you will quickly realize that this way of selling is more profitable, especially in the later stages of the game. Of course, in addition to sales and haggling, clients can also pawn their belongings. However, if the client pledges an item that must be picked up after a few days for a surcharge, it may happen that they do not come and that antique remains in the player's possession. Staking antiques is the essence of the game, and through gameplay and progression, the player has the opportunity to fulfill special parameters through which the player can obtain special licenses.

For example, after some time you can get a special license with which you can renovate antiques yourself. From a normal hammer to a very valuable sword from the Middle Ages, refurbishing is the best way a good pawn shop can make money. Appraisal licenses for firearms, art, jewelry... these are all ways to make the best pawn shop in the neighborhood. Gameplay is quite linear, but these perks bring another dimension that forces players to "grind", which in the end is lucrative and fruitful. Admittedly, after some time and hundreds of hammers and mallets that clients can collect on the street and bring, as well as stone statuettes of dragons, there is saturation. After a few hours of play, the same antiques lead to repetition of the game, which can turn off a lot of players, but when the perks are included in the whole story, I think that the game is varied enough to play and reach the ultimate goal - to make the best pawn shop that would put Rick Harrison to shame.

What gives the game another dimension is hitting the thief with a slipper that you can throw or simply hit him. You have to be very careful here, because the game has a perk with which you can skip several hours, for example, skip the whole night scene, which is quite boring at the beginning, and in those hours you can run out of the most valuable things. Of course, thieves take more expensive things, and that can hurt your business a lot. Some reviewers have criticized this mechanic because it is not "elaborate" enough and frequent enough to harm players in the long run. And I agree with them a bit here, because when a thief comes to you once in a day that you play for more than half an hour, the gameplay itself suffers.

Conclusion - a solid simulator to break the boredom

Pawnbroker Simulator may at first seem like another in a series of classic "trading" simulators, but beneath the surface hides much more than expected. The game successfully combines simple mechanics with deeper systems of evaluation, bargaining and business development, which makes it interesting enough to hold attention through extended play. Although it suffers from certain problems; like repetitiveness, occasional bugs, and underdeveloped additional mechanics like thieves — the core gameplay loop is tight and addictive enough to make up for these shortcomings.

All in all, Pawnbroker Simulator isn't perfect, but it's above average for its genre. For a relatively affordable price, it offers a solid amount of content and satisfying gameplay that will especially attract fans of economic and "job sim" games. With the support of the developers, Pawnbroker Simulator has potential, and players may have the opportunity to experience that potential.
