Darrin Henson, the choreographer known for his work with *NSYNC and the author of the iconic dance to the hit song Bye Bye Bye, launched a legal battle against Sony. According to Billboard, Henson filed a lawsuit against Sony Music Holdings on March 27, claiming that the company allowed the use of his choreography in the movie Deadpool & Wolverine and in the popular game Fortnite without his permission.
In the lawsuit, he states that Sony did not have the right to license his work and demands full recognition of ownership and return of all earned funds. The dance was first performed at the Radio Music Awards in 1999 during NSYNC's performance, and a year later Henson won an MTV Video Music Award for the choreography.
It received a new wave of popularity thanks to the opening scene of the latest Deadpool movie, in which Ryan Reynolds performs this very dance. The emote arrived in Fortnite on September 24, 2024, but has not appeared in the shop since then. It is interesting that Epic Games was not named in the lawsuit, even though their game is one of the platforms on which the disputed choreography appeared.
